Via Grain Design, a wall sized version of their Bound hand mirror with edges wrapped in hemp twine. Like the hand mirror Bound is made from waterjet cut salvaged mirror but, unlike the handheld version, is backed in laser cut bamboo and felt.

New designs from Grain also include Spool, a wildly patterned build-it-yourself modular system that can be assembled into a variety of freestanding structures such as room dividers, screens and table bases. Says Grain, “Spool is made of upcycled paper thread spools removed from the Los Angeles apparel industry’s waste stream. Spool kits, which include 240 spools and 520 connectors, can be used to build various interior installations, such as screens, table bases and partitions.

A second mirror design, Hung, is Grain’s simplest design. “Inspired by rope-work techniques Minola picked up while studying boat building in Maine, Hung is an oval shaped waterjet cut mirror threaded and hung by half inch thick manila rope that is woven back into itself to hold the mirror securely without any glue or fasteners.”

“Our work takes into consideration a series of questions about how and and where things are made and how we can be innovative with reuse, renewable materials and life cycle.”

Grain’s new work was presented at ICFF 2011 this past May 14 to 17.

It’s good to see that the Mattel Hot Wheels brand is experimenting more and more in guerrilla style stunts globally. With such a fun brand the potential for creative expression is endless.

Ogilvy agency & Mather Bogota have been approached to create some unique campaigns for the brand as they are now marketing Hot Wheels to a much more older demographic.

The Ogilvy agency & Mather Bogota had the idea to create an optical illusion. By imagining a false loop, the motorway gives the illusion to be part of a circuit, bringing a little imagination in the landscape.

Artist Paulius Nosokas went out and bought a number of hand-held light fixtures in a variety of wattages and configurations: fluorescent, incandescent, large, small, flashlights, “to discover what might unexpectedly be revealed as my solitary performance with these fixtures was frozen in stop-motion image.”

Says Nosokas, “I found, as you can see, that light isn’t only a source of illumination, but a wonderful creator of form.”

“As the result of my camera’s shutter speed and aperture, there are arcs and solid curves, precise circles and “solid” planes; there are texts (written backwards) in mid-air; and there is, of course, the contrast of the looming darkness–and all that it implies.”

“Performing/being alone with my actions–only to let the single image have the final ‘word’–is a big part of what moves me in this project. Also the fact that I am using very basic materials, with only my cozy apartment for a setting, or, when I’m shooting outdoors, near-empty vistas of winter snow.”

“Visual drama, it seems, can be set on a very basic stage.”

“The camera has long been regarded as an “instrument” used for capturing the moment; here, I’m using it as kind of metronome–one that let’s me dance [alone] with Time.”

A precisely machined chair that lets “the sensuality of the wood material – from oak to maple to ash – express itself” is one of the many objects that the Bouroullec brothers will be presenting at Milan Design Week this year.

Called Osso, the collection will include a chair, an armchair, a children’s chair as well as high and low stools.

According to the Bouroullecs, working with Osso manufacturer Mattiazzi “is comparable to work with an organic farm. While being a small, family-owned company that has been manufacturing chairs for others since about forty years, Mattiazzi decided to do less yet better. By using sophisticated CNC set of tools and at the same time a greatly refined manual know-how, Mattiazzi has a hybrid way to consider furniture production.”

“We were particularly interested by the fact that all the equipment is powered by solar energy and that the wood is coming from the surrounding areas to be carefully selected without the use of any chemical treatments. They came back to the basics and this is precisely what piqued our interest and our fascination for the Mattiazzi family’s endeavour.”

“As designers, we feel involved in supporting such valiant microstructures that are always on the edge as they try to adjust to a constantly changing market. That said, the Osso chair had to be the illustration of what Mattiazzi is in its roots. We designed an object in plain wood but not in regular plain wood, the quality of the wood literally makes the object, like the best piece of meat would make the refinement of a dish.”

“Our intention was to let the sensuality of the wood material – from oak to maple to ash – express itself. The Osso chair invites to be touched, even caressed as it is extremely sculpted and polished thanks to the use of highly sophisticated digital control equipment. The high-tech assembling system of geometrical wood panels allows a quite singular strength while preserving a design balance of the object.”
